Pastoral Care

Pastoral care is a significant strength, students appreciate the care teachers have in dealing with their concerns. Section 48 2018

Pastoral care lays at the heart of our academy and permeates all areas of the academy. Some distinctive features of our pastoral care are set out below.

Daily Form time

All students begin the day in one of six form classes for a 20-minute form registration. Each form has a dedicated form tutor to offer care, support and routine, many of whom will continue with their form throughout their years at the academy.

Assistant Heads, Heads of Year and Pastoral Assistants

We have a clear pastoral structure across our academy. Each Key Stage is led by an Assistant Headteacher. Each Year Group has a Head of Year to oversee the progress, welfare and care of all students. Heads of Year will be in regular contact with students and our families. To offer further support we have two Pastoral Assistants to assist Heads of Year and they are non-teaching members of staff being on hand to offer support and help to our students throughout the day.

Our Heads of Year and contact details are:

Pastoral Wellbeing Mentors

Pastoral Wellbeing Mentors work with those students who need support with their behaviour. This helps them to improve their behaviour towards others. Ofsted 2022

We boast a well-established team of two Pastoral Wellbeing Mentors, which is led by our Pastoral Intervention Manager, Mr Datson, who is also our lead Mentor. Our mentors offer one-to-one and group sessions across all year groups. Our mentors also work with external agencies such as the West Ham Foundation to offer our students the opportunity to develop social and entrepreneurial skills.

Our mentoring area is always accessible for students before and after school and is very well attended by our students during break and lunchtime as a safe and comfortable space to speak to a mentor, socialise or complete some private study.

Mr Datson also oversees our Pastoral Intervention provision, which is our base to work with our students at those times when they haven't made the right choices and require some extra support and guidance to put things right and begin to make the right choices.

Our SEND Provision

Our SEND provision is well led and fully staffed with committed staff to offer support and care not only in lessons but also before school, break time and lunch time. Our SEND area offers the space for students to complete some private study, play some board games or to find a quiet area to relax. Our SEND team of staff are always around for any student who wishes to speak to someone for care and support.

Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society (BCCS)

We have an on-site student counsellor available to offer our students support when they need to access counselling support. It is of utmost importance for us to offer this support to our students when they need it most and remain committed to working in partnership with BCCS. Should you wish to have more information, please contact Mr Datson in the first instance.

Academy Chaplain

Sister Ann-Maris IHM leads our Chaplaincy across the academy. She offers support and guidance to all our students, staff and families. Sister Ann-Maris will always make time for anyone who needs some support or guidance or just a listening ear.

Leaders place great importance on developing the whole child. They provide pupils with kindness and support. Pupils respond well to this. They are safe and enjoy their learning. Ofsted 2022
